EVOLVE YOUR ORGANISATION

Consultancy

The only certainty these days, is that things change

We are living in VUCA – volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous – times, which means we need to become masters of change. To evolve and thrive, organisations need a shared vision and a culture where responsibility is devolved so people are willing and able to take the initiative.

From an initial brief to completion, working with Claire is brilliantly uncomplicated in an otherwise complicated world

Clarifying the Direction of Change

I believe change is done with people not to them, so the earlier key stakeholders understand the need to change and get involved in co-designing solutions, the better. I help you to create change informed by the whole organisation from the outset, build high levels of commitment and lay the groundwork for success.

Outlining Your Support Options

I support you to lead change, drawing on my wide experience of other change projects we’ll map out the change you want to create before proposing support options to suit your budget. These might include staff training, facilitated sessions with internal or external stakeholders to build engagement and/or start developing plans, or individual mentoring support for change leaders.

Supporting you Flexibly

We’ll review progress together as the project evolves, to keep work on track and adjust support as needed. I offer a flexible approach after the initial phase, ranging from simply being available as an adviser or sounding-board, through to providing more hands-on support.

Improved data about volunteering enabled growth to operate the bigger site

Clarity of purpose and values improved understanding and collaboration between volunteers and staff

The Challenge

Ripon Museum Trust (RMT) is a small independent museum group. Historically a volunteer-led organisation, I supported RMT at a time of transition as the organisation recruited a larger core staff and sought to secure a historic building. My brief was to work closely alongside the new Director, and longstanding Trustees, to develop a shared vision for change which enabled growth through a culture of empowerment of volunteers.

This year-long project began by engaging a project group (the ‘change leaders’) including staff, Trustees and volunteers to shape and lead the change via a series of workshops. There was resistance among staff and volunteers initially as it was perceived change was being led by a handful of Trustees and so building ownership quickly was critical to the project’s success. This first stage culminated in development of new organisational values, and I supported the change leaders to deliver a series of stakeholder consultations to launch the project and begin delivering change using these core values. Change leaders were offered training (which I co-delivered with Deb Barnard) to develop their confidence and skills in leading change and creating their new organisational culture. I also ran a range of training sessions for volunteers and change leaders, including on topics such as team dynamics and collaboration skills, in response to demand as the project evolved. Throughout I provided 1-2-1 coaching for change leaders as required and supported them to develop individual development plans which included study trips, mentoring, training etc. I commissioned RMT’s first volunteer survey which generated evidence of impact used in a successful Community Asset Transfer process and capital fundraising capaign. The volunteer survey results also informed wider recruitment of the larger pool of volunteers needed to operate their expanded buildings.
