Below is a selected list of my most recent independent projects, listed by type. This also gives a sense of the range and type of clients I have worked with.
Business and strategic planning
The Hepworth Wakefield – The Hepworth Wakefield will be the third largest contemporary visual art gallery outside London with a turnover of £3million. With co-consultants Holly Tebbutt and Tom Wilcox.
Visual Arts and Galleries Association (VAGA) – national professional body for visual arts professionals. Working closely with VAGA’s main funders (ACE and Scottish Arts Council), and involving an analysis of the business models of a range of professional bodies in the arts sector. With co-consultant Holly Tebbutt.
Beaconsfield – small-scale contemporary public gallery, London.
Volcano – mid-scale touring theatre company, Wales.
Research and analysis
Clore Fellowship Research Project: ‘Are two heads better than one? What makes for successful joint leadership of arts and cultural organisations and how might the Artistic and Executive Director models benefit the visual arts’, supervised by Professor John Holden, City University.
NESTA – commissioned essay on the ‘Cultural Economy’ for publication in July 2010. Presented at ‘Leadership in Uncertain Times’ seminar, NESTA, 14 July 2010.
Tate National - report on future options for Tate Connects.
Mission, Models and Money – Phase One research for Capital Matters programme. The report from this project was launched at the Culture Change conference on 27th January at National Theatre in London where I chaired a workshop.
Creative Industries Development Agency (CIDA) – undertook research with professionals in France and Germany for Graham Devlin’s article on artists’ research.
Artquest – Money Matters project – research into artists’ funding and finance needs, leading to the development of a new support programme (including microfinance options) for artists in London (current).
Funding Central – developed grant funding section content for main Government website for charity sector.
Organisational & Professional Development
British Council, facilitation of workshops for French professionals on the theme of arts and social inclusion as part of Cultural Leadership International programme.
Artquest – programmed and managed ‘Value Added’: a major one-day conference on participation in contemporary visual arts.
National Council of Graduate Entrepreneurs – Joint course leader and mentor for ‘Flying Start’: 3-day intensive business-readiness courses for Women Entrepreneurs, Creative Industries.
York City Council – Designed and delivered training for artists and businesses from North Yorkshire on IPR and trading issues.
Fundraising
National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) – I have advised on, and developed, a number of successful major (multi-year projects £500K- £3 million) grant applications and competitive tenders including to Northern Rock Foundation, ERSC, Office of the Third Sector (central government) and BIG Lottery.
